Job description

Join Amazon's Global Materials Science organization as a Lab Engineer, where you will lead materials testing and characterization efforts to develop sustainable e-commerce packaging. This role involves driving technical direction in advanced laboratories and solving complex testing challenges. You will mentor fellow engineers and collaborate with cross-functional partners to enhance packaging materials that impact millions of customer experiences. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Paper Science, Polymer Science, Physics or related fields.
  • 6+ years of experience in packaging materials development, testing, manufacturing or related field.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Paper Science, Chemical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of laboratory experience in materials testing, quality control, or research environment.
  • Experience developing test methods or SOPs for materials characterization.
  • Experience with packaging materials or other forest products testing following standard test methods.
  • Hands-on experience with testing equipment such as tensile testers, burst testers, and thermal analysis equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and independently conduct advanced materials testing using various characterization tools.
  • Design, develop, and refine test protocols following industry standards and internal methods.
  • Perform complex testing on packaging materials and interpret results in the context of project objectives.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and ensure proper calibration across the lab's instruments.
  • Prepare test specimens according to specifications and adapt approaches for novel materials.
  • Collect, organize, and document experimental data with high accuracy.
  • Generate comprehensive test reports that synthesize findings and recommend next steps.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for testing activities.
  • Mentor and train junior lab engineers on testing techniques and data analysis.
  • Partner with engineers and scientists on experimental design and result interpretation.
