Job description

The Controls Engineer at Rivian is responsible for overseeing controls and automation systems within the production facility in Normal, IL. This role focuses on PLC programming and optimizing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems to ensure seamless operation. The engineer will troubleshoot production issues and design upgrades across various assembly areas. This position reports directly to the Manager of AGV Maintenance and Repair.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of Controls Engineering experience or equivalent work experience.
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Expertise with common controls hardware components used in high-volume manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience integrating and commissioning high volume manufacturing equipment.
  • Solid understanding of Wi-Fi 6, 5G private networks, and PROFINET/EtherNet/IP protocols.
  • In-depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA) and industrial networking.
  • Certified knowledge of ISO 3691-4 and ISO 13849 (Safety of Machinery).
  • Experience developing electrical schematics using EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in controls equipment buy-offs at vendor sites and Rivian’s factory.
  • Develop controls standards and specifications based on project feedback.
  • Architect the handshake between AGVs and FLP/SAP systems for automation.
  • Continuously improve production lines and fleet battery cycles.
  • Lead the ISO 3691-4 validation process for safety compliance.
  • Design communication protocols between AGVs and lineside equipment.
  • Act as the Level 2 escalation point for AGV Technicians during system errors.
  • Maintain and version control equipment programs and configuration files.
