Job description
The Sr. Materials Engineer role at AWS focuses on materials selection and innovation for liquid cooling systems in data centers. The position requires collaboration with mechanical and chemical engineers to ensure the quality and compatibility of materials used in cooling systems. The team is dedicated to enhancing the reliability and cost-effectiveness of engineering designs while maintaining high safety standards. This role offers an opportunity to impact the development of advanced thermal systems in a dynamic and inclusive environment.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in materials science, materials engineering, or chemical engineering with a focus on liquid cooling systems, wetted materials, or coolant chemistry.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with a materials concentration, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience with coolant formulation evaluation, wetted materials compatibility testing, or thermal fluid system materials selection.
- Working knowledge of thermodynamic and fluid physics principles as applied to cooling system design.
- Experience with materials characterization techniques such as FTIR, SEM/EDS, or ICP-OES.
- Experience carrying hardware or datacenter design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and materials for data center or server hardware.
- Experience with microfluidic systems, micro-channel cooling, or advanced liquid cooling architectures.
- Knowledge of thermal interface materials (TIMs) and their integration within complex thermal stacks.
- Experience with advanced coolant technologies including nanomaterial-enhanced fluids or next-generation water-based formulations.
- Familiarity with elastomer and rubber chemistry as it relates to sealing and compatibility in cooling loops.
- Background in materials sustainability, environmental impact assessment of engineering materials, or green chemistry.
- Experience in chemical or materials vendor quality management.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes for metals, alloys, and engineered plastics.
- Experience mentoring or cross-training engineering teams in materials science fundamentals.
Responsibilities
- Identify, evaluate, and qualify coolant formulations from multiple vendors for liquid-cooled datacenter servers.
- Own the wetted materials specification and compliance for server hardware and coolant loops.
- Evaluate and select materials for compatibility within wetted systems, considering long-term chemical interactions.
- Perform and direct thermodynamic and fluid physics calculations for cooling system design.
- Assess coolant additive packages for chemical stability and long-term reliability.
- Perform materials characterization using spectroscopy and analytical tools.
- Mentor and educate mechanical design engineers on materials science fundamentals and coolant chemistry.
- Drive materials sustainability initiatives and evaluate the environmental impact of coolant chemistries.
- Own end-to-end quality of coolant from manufacturing site through datacenters.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
