Job description

Rivian is seeking a Senior Staff Radar Antenna Design Engineer to lead the design and production of advanced waveguide antennas for high-performance imaging radar systems. This role requires a technical leader with expertise in electromagnetic design who can translate complex radar performance requirements into manufacturable solutions. The ideal candidate will work across various engineering disciplines, including radar architecture, RF hardware, and mechanical engineering. The position emphasizes collaboration, technical decision-making, and mentorship within a diverse team committed to innovation and environmental protection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related technical field, with significant industry experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • Typically 12+ years of relevant engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated technical depth and impact.
  • Extensive professional experience designing antennas or microwave components for demanding radar, sensing, communications, aerospace, or automotive applications.
  • Deep expertise in waveguide antenna design, including aperture synthesis, slotted-waveguide arrays, and broadband performance optimization.
  • Strong command of electromagnetic theory, antenna array theory, and RF measurement techniques.
  • Expert-level experience with 3D full-wave electromagnetic simulation and optimization tools.
  • Hands-on experience with antenna measurement systems and uncertainty analysis.
  • Ability to interpret complex measurement data and make technically rigorous design decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Define antenna architectures and performance targets for next-generation imaging radar systems.
  • Lead the design and optimization of advanced waveguide antenna technologies.
  • Develop electromagnetic models and design methods for complex antenna structures.
  • Drive antenna concepts through electromagnetic simulation, prototype design, and measurement.
  • Establish antenna-level budgets, verification plans, and acceptance criteria aligned with radar system performance.
  • Partner with radar architects and RF engineers to optimize system-level tradeoffs.
  • Lead integration of the antenna into automotive packaging and manage environmental sealing.
  • Own technical decisions and communicate tradeoffs clearly to senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Mentor antenna engineers and raise the technical bar through design reviews and best practices.
  • Support design release, validation, production launch, and field issue resolution for radar antenna hardware.

Benefits

  • Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
