Job description

The Cloud Hardware Development Engineer role at AWS focuses on ensuring the reliability and performance of large deployed storage platforms. The team is responsible for the entire lifecycle of storage server hardware, from design to operations. This position involves driving failure analysis and component lifecycle management while collaborating with various teams to enhance fleet quality. The ideal candidate will work on translating field performance data into design improvements for next-generation platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of hardware design, development, and validation experience for server or compute platforms.
  • Experience in one or more server technologies: thermal/mechanical design, power delivery, high-speed signal integrity, or accelerator subsystems.
  • Experience developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and validation test procedures.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience working with ODMs through product development and manufacturing lifecycle.
  • Experience with fleet reliability engineering, including failure analysis and corrective action processes at scale.
  • 2+ years of experience working with hardware bring-up, debug, or validation of storage server platforms.
  • Experience with PCIe topology, NVMe, SSD controllers, and component lifecycle management.
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures for electrical or mechanical systems.
  • Experience working in large-scale datacenter or cloud environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own fleet quality metrics post-launch, including platform-level annualized failure rates and component-level failure modes.
  • Drive root cause analysis on high-volume failure patterns, particularly connector and cable-driven failures.
  • Correlate field failure data with manufacturing lot, supplier, and test escape information to identify systemic trends.
  • Manage platform-specific BOM variants across multiple deployed generations simultaneously.
  • Translate fleet failure patterns into concrete requirements for next-generation platforms.
  • Define and execute validation strategies from PCBA bring-up through server and rack integration.
  • Own hardware debug during EVT/DVT/PVT builds and conduct root cause analysis.
  • Work with storage service teams, datacenter operations, and NPI engineering to align on fleet quality targets.
  • Collaborate with firmware, software, and operations teams to ensure diagnostic tooling provides visibility into fleet health.
  • May require occasional regional and international travel to Design and Manufacturing Partner sites.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
