Job description
As a Systems Engineer on AWS Incident Response, you will lead high-severity incident response efforts, coordinating teams to mitigate complex failures in real time. This role requires a deep understanding of AWS services, networking, and infrastructure, as you will be responsible for improving detection accuracy and operational processes. You will work within the AWS Incident Response team, which focuses on ensuring high availability and continuous improvement of incident management. Your contributions will directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of incident response across AWS.
Requirements
- 3+ years of systems engineering or technical support experience
- Experience in written and verbal communication skills to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience scripting in one or more languages such as Bash, Python, Perl, or Ruby
- Understanding of operating systems, networking fundamentals, and distributed systems
- Experience with operational monitoring, alerting, and metrics tools like CloudWatch or Datadog
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems across multiple systems
- Familiarity with incident management tooling and workflows in a large-scale production environment
- Experience with AWS services and cloud infrastructure
- Experience using generative AI or automation to solve operational problems
- Track record of authoring post-incident analyses and driving corrective actions
- Experience building operational dashboards, runbooks, or automation to improve efficiency
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code and deployment tooling like CDK or Terraform
- Experience coordinating across globally distributed teams and time zones
- Comfort operating with ambiguity and a self-starting approach
Responsibilities
- Lead high-severity incident response calls end to end, assessing impact and coordinating resolver teams.
- Own and run operational health reviews, building and maintaining dashboards and metrics.
- Improve detection accuracy and speed by identifying patterns and building proactive mechanisms.
- Deep-dive operational data to find systemic issues and prioritize improvements.
- Identify gaps in operational processes and build mechanisms to reduce time-to-detection.
- Apply scripting, automation, and generative AI to accelerate incident response.
- Work with service teams to ensure corrective actions from incidents are completed.
- Mentor peers in areas of technical and operational strength.
