This role is for an engineer on the ACOS Storage Infrastructure team at Apple, focusing on the design, operation, and optimization of large-scale distributed storage systems. The team is responsible for ensuring data durability, integrity, and performance while managing the challenges posed by denser drives and high-performance workloads. The engineer will influence technical decisions across the organization and work closely with hardware engineering partners. This position requires a deep understanding of storage systems at exabyte scale and the ability to drive improvements in storage efficiency and capacity management.

• 15+ years in software development, with 10+ years designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed storage systems.
• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with a PhD in distributed systems or storage being a strong plus.
• Proven track record of delivering storage systems at approximately exabyte scale.
• Deep, hands-on expertise in the encoding layer, including Reed-Solomon and Local Reconstruction Codes.
• Familiarity with the architecture of industry-leading storage systems such as Google Colossus and Amazon S3.
• Experience designing storage for high-performance workloads, particularly AI/ML or large-scale analytics.
• Operational credibility with experience in debugging data loss and availability incidents.
• Exceptional ability to influence without authority and drive major technical decisions.

• Own the technical agenda for storage efficiency, integrity, performance, and capacity planning.
• Drive down the cost per usable byte while maintaining durability and maximizing IOPS utilization.
• Guarantee 11-nines of durability in production and own detection and repair processes.
• Deliver differentiated performance tiers for standard and high-performance workloads.
• Manage demand forecasting, drive-generation transitions, and capacity onboarding and decommissioning.
• Collaborate with Apple's storage organization and hardware engineering partners on technical judgments.
