Rivian is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Autonomy organization to lead the development of a distributed compute and storage platform essential for autonomy workloads. This role is part of the Platform Services team within the AI Platform organization and focuses on optimizing compute resources and data access for training, simulation, and visualization tasks. The engineer will work closely with various teams to ensure efficient operation of a platform that supports a fleet of over 100,000 vehicles and extensive data management. The position requires deep expertise in Kubernetes, large-scale object storage, and performance optimization at petabyte scale.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience building and operating distributed systems in production.
• 5+ years owning a distributed compute, batch execution, or scheduling platform used by other engineering teams.
• 5+ years with Kubernetes as an execution substrate, including scheduling and resource management.
• 5+ years with large-scale object storage, including data layout and lifecycle management.
• 3+ years with a distributed processing or training framework such as Ray, Spark, Flink, or Dask.
• 3+ years hands-on with Go, C++, or Rust, plus strong Python skills.
• 3+ years with infrastructure as code and configuration management tools.
• 3+ years with queueing and event-driven systems, including autoscaling workloads.
• 3+ years with production monitoring and alerting tools.
• 3+ years debugging production distributed systems.
• 2+ years carrying an infrastructure cost target and meeting it.

• Own the architecture and roadmap for Autonomy's distributed compute platform.
• Build scalable tools and APIs to facilitate large-scale computation for engineers.
• Profile jobs run by other teams to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks.
• Eliminate GPU fragmentation and optimize cluster efficiency.
• Manage the storage architecture for autonomy data at petabyte scale.
• Drive throughput and turnaround time for heavy workloads such as training data loading.
• Own the infrastructure behind job submission and autoscaling.
• Define metrics and build dashboards for platform observability.
• Set SLAs for job admission, completion, and data availability.
• Collaborate with the security and privacy team on data governance.
• Set technical standards for distributed workloads and mentor senior engineers.
