Job description
The Software Engineer II and Senior Software Engineer positions are part of the Windows Engineering Systems Core Build Team at Microsoft. This team focuses on modernizing core build tools and services to enhance reliability, performance, and developer experience. Engineers will work on complex systems, addressing failures and improving operational continuity. The role emphasizes collaboration with product teams and mentoring fellow engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C++, C#, Java, or TypeScript.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C++, C#, Java, or TypeScript is preferred.
- Experience with Windows internals, native development, and build technologies such as C++, C#, PowerShell, MSBuild, BuildXL, or Bazel is preferred.
- Experience with developer infrastructure, build systems, compilers, CI/CD platforms, and dependency management is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the design and delivery of multi-quarter initiatives that modernize core build tools, services, and workflows.
- Diagnose complex failures across build orchestration, toolchains, infrastructure, dependencies, and artifact production.
- Partner with product teams and Engineering Systems organizations to integrate new workflows while protecting compatibility and operational continuity.
- Establish measurable success criteria, telemetry, and operational signals that make regressions and customer impact visible.
- Advance secure software-supply-chain practices, including dependency governance and compliance automation.
- Use and improve AI-assisted engineering workflows for investigation, implementation, review, and operational response.
- Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, debugging, and project leadership.
