The Principal Software Engineer will focus on defining how Microsoft 365 Copilot remembers user interactions, ensuring that memory is formed, stored, and retrieved effectively while maintaining user privacy. This senior role involves setting technical direction and collaborating with various teams across Microsoft 365 and Windows. The engineer will work on the architecture of Copilot's memory systems, ensuring high precision memory retrieval and compliance with privacy standards. The position requires navigating ambiguity and driving outcomes in a fast-paced environment.

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
• Master’s or Doctorate Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience is preferred.
• 4+ years of experience designing, shipping, and operating large scale distributed services or data platforms in production is preferred.
• Experience building memory, personalization, knowledge graph, or retrieval systems in production is preferred.

• Own the architecture and implementation of Copilot’s memory substrate including storage, schema, write path, retrieval, and lifecycle management.
• Design and ship the pipelines that convert signals from various sources into high precision memory.
• Set technical direction for privacy, compliance, and user control including consent and auditability.
• Partner with Applied Science on evaluation metrics for memory quality and user outcomes.
• Raise the engineering bar through design and code reviews and technical mentorship.
• Influence across organizational boundaries to align contracts and platform capabilities.
