Job description
The Mechanical Project Engineer will take ownership of complex automated fulfillment projects at Amazon, focusing on mechanical design and engineering. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers while ensuring project standards are met. The engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design of automated fulfillment center projects from concept through installation. This position is crucial for driving the delivery of Amazon's logistics network expansion.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Experience in design/innovation, research & development, manufacturing, or industrial engineering
- Experience working with material handling equipment (MHE)
- Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, REVIT, or BIM 360
- Experience communicating clearly with leadership and cross-functional teams
- Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, and statistical analysis
- Experience with complex automated material handling equipment and packaging technologies
- Experience in process improvement projects using Lean methodologies
- Experience with industry safety and egress standards such as IBC and ANSI B11.19
Responsibilities
- Own and develop subsystem layouts for automated material handling systems with minimal oversight.
- Independently select and specify conveyor types and third-party equipment to meet project requirements.
- Coordinate with electrical, controls, and structural engineers for integrated design solutions.
- Deliver complete 3D models and manage clash detection for project areas.
- Execute and manage mechanical engineering deliverables, schedules, and quality standards.
- Lead communication with on-site construction teams to address field issues.
- Produce complete installation packages ready for construction use.
- Monitor progress of engineers on the subsystem team to ensure deliverables meet project timelines.
- Perform and validate all system and component calculations independently.
- Engineer solutions for custom parts and non-standard applications.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers on technical approaches and design standards.
- Review and approve work of junior engineers, providing constructive feedback.
- Ensure mechanical designs meet all safety, regulatory, and performance standards.
- Identify and resolve design issues proactively during all project phases.
- Travel to sites to conduct surveys, audits, and resolve field issues.
