The Java Runtimes Team at Amazon is seeking a skilled engineer to enhance the performance and efficiency of Java runtimes, particularly focusing on OpenJDK and Amazon Corretto. This role involves working on compilers, garbage collection, and systems software to optimize real running services. The team has a strong commitment to security and quality, having migrated Amazon's default JDK to OpenJDK and launched Amazon Corretto. • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language
• 5+ years of experience leading design or architecture of new and existing systems
• Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team
• Direct contributions to OpenJDK, HotSpot JVM, or another production managed runtime
• Compiler backend or optimization experience in areas such as instruction selection or code generation
• Familiarity with JVM internals including bytecode and JIT deoptimization
• A track record of upstream open-source contributions or published performance work
• A master's or PhD in Computer Science or a related field with a focus on compilers or systems
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives across teams

• Identify areas for improvement using data from real running services and implement optimizations.
• Design, implement, and benchmark improvements to JIT compilation and garbage collection.
• Contribute changes upstream to OpenJDK and Amazon Corretto through code review.
• Tune runtime behavior for performance across x86 and Graviton architectures.
• Build profiling and auto-tuning tools to enhance runtime expertise across the fleet.
• Share findings with the engineering community and assist service teams in adopting improvements.
