Job description
The Staff ML Infrastructure Engineer will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of Apple's ML infrastructure and generative AI platform. This team focuses on building robust systems that connect scalable data pipelines with advanced machine learning workflows, enabling the development of real-world AI applications. The role involves addressing complex system-level challenges and ensuring high-quality data systems that support large-scale model training. Engineers will collaborate with a world-class team to innovate and streamline the ML development process.
Requirements
- 10+ years of work experience in machine learning infrastructure, distributed data systems, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience building and shipping large-scale data or ML infrastructure and platforms in production.
- Extensive experience architecting and delivering large-scale distributed data or ML infrastructure that multiple teams or products depend on in production.
- Deep systems engineering skills with strong Python and a systems language, preferably Rust.
- Deep familiarity with columnar and lakehouse formats such as Parquet, Iceberg, Delta, or Lance.
- Strong working knowledge of the end-to-end ML workflow and how training and inference consume data.
- Familiarity with modern ML and generative techniques at the level needed to design for those consumers.
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
- Set the technical direction for the ML infrastructure platform.
- Own and solve the hardest system-level problems within the platform.
- Design highly available and easy-to-use systems for ML workflows.
- Mentor and elevate the engineers around you.
- Collaborate with multiple teams to align on technical direction.
- Architect data systems that efficiently serve training and inference needs.
- Contribute to the development of data lineage and governance systems.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
