Job description
The Senior Hardware Manufacturing Engineer will lead manufacturing strategy and execution for complex custom-silicon and cloud-hardware platforms, focusing on GPU and AI systems. This role is part of the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering team, which ensures that Microsoft-designed hardware is built efficiently and reliably at supplier factories. The engineer will work closely with various teams to address manufacturing challenges and drive product quality and delivery. The position emphasizes collaboration, technical leadership, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
Requirements
- Master's Degree in Manufacturing, Material, Mechanical, Electrical, Thermal, or Industrial Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years experience in a manufacturing environment/repair OR Bachelor's Degree in the same fields AND 5+ years experience in a manufacturing environment/repair OR equivalent experience.
- Strong leadership, facilitation, communication, problem-solving, and triage skills.
- Deep hardware manufacturing expertise spanning assembly, test, tooling, fixtures, process qualification, factory operations, quality systems, repair, and production ramp.
- Experience leading manufacturing engineering for AI, GPU, HPC, or rack-scale systems involving optical networking and high-speed interconnects.
- Hands-on experience developing, qualifying, and manufacturing optical and high-speed connectivity components.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior manufacturing engineering lead for assigned cloud-hardware, GPU, optical-networking, and custom-silicon programs.
- Lead design for manufacturing, testability, serviceability, and sustainability reviews with various teams.
- Translate product architecture into production processes, equipment, and tooling strategies.
- Drive manufacturability across optical engines and modules, high-speed electrical cables, and related infrastructure.
- Develop and qualify handling, cleaning, inspection, and test processes for optical assemblies.
- Drive qualification and production readiness across optical-module and contract-manufacturing partners.
- Convert product architecture into integrated manufacturing plans covering prototype builds and volume ramp.
- Assess and develop production-line capability, factory layouts, and staffing models.
- Provide technical leadership to contract manufacturers and assess manufacturing capability.
- Lead supplier process qualification and readiness assessments.
