Job description

The Research Intern will join IBM Quantum, focusing on GPU acceleration for hybrid HPC-quantum applications. This role involves working alongside quantum research scientists and HPC experts to enhance the performance of algorithms through parallelization and GPU offloading. The team values curiosity and scientific rigor, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge technology in quantum computing. Interns will gain hands-on experience in optimizing research code and evaluating performance at scale.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with modern software engineering practices.
  • Proficiency in at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, or Rust.
  • Some hands-on experience with HPC software like OpenMP, MPI, or CUDA.
  • Ability to communicate technical results clearly to both HPC engineers and domain scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze sequential code to identify opportunities for parallelization using shared-memory and distributed-memory techniques.
  • Identify portions of the resulting code that can be offloaded to GPUs for improved performance.
  • Run the code at scale, evaluating performance and scalability with up to hundreds of GPUs.
  • Collaborate with quantum scientists to understand the impact of optimized code on their research.

Benefits

  • IBM offers competitive compensation, healthcare coverage, retirement programs, paid parental leave, tuition assistance, wellness programs, flexible work options, and extensive learning and certification resources.
