Job description

The Principal Software Engineer will join the Microsoft Dataverse team, focusing on defining and driving the technical strategy for intelligent and globally distributed services. This role involves leading complex initiatives, managing competing priorities, and ensuring high standards for quality and security. The team is responsible for building services that manage and optimize the SQL database fleet underpinning Dataverse. This is an opportunity to work on strategic products that are critical to Microsoft’s mission of empowering organizations worldwide.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience architecting and delivering large-scale production cloud services.
  • Experience with SQL and enterprise-grade relational database systems.
  • Experience designing, building, and troubleshooting scalable, resilient, event-driven systems.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for services that manage and optimize Dataverse’s globally distributed database fleet.
  • Demonstrate strong end-to-end ownership of critical technical areas from problem definition to long-term evolution.
  • Create clarity in complex engineering spaces by framing problems and converting insights into coherent technical strategies.
  • Lead complex initiatives spanning multiple teams and organizations while managing dependencies across various domains.
  • Effectively manage competing priorities while maintaining high standards for quality and execution.
  • Own quality, security, compliance, reliability, and operability by design and establish automation practices.
  • Multiply the effectiveness of the engineering organization by mentoring engineers and raising the bar for engineering excellence.
  • Embody the team's culture and values by working collaboratively towards shared goals.
