Job description
Amazon is seeking an embedded software engineer to develop safety-critical motor control and actuator firmware for advanced robotics systems. This role involves designing real-time embedded software that meets functional safety standards while collaborating with cross-functional teams. The engineer will work hands-on throughout the development lifecycle, contributing to innovative automation solutions that operate safely alongside humans. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of robotics at Amazon's scale.
Requirements
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience of new and existing systems
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- Working knowledge of motor control fundamentals, including feedback control loops, encoders, and current sensing
- Familiarity with functional safety principles and the ability to translate safety requirements into software constraints
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Master's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as QNX
- Experience with embedded communication interfaces such as CAN / CAN FD, EtherCAT, SPI, I2C, and RS-485
- Strong understanding of motor control theory with hands-on implementation of calibration, filtering, and synchronization for robust feedback control
- Practical application of functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC 62304, or ISO 26262
- Knowledge of embedded safety mechanisms including watchdogs, overcurrent protection, brownout detection, and thermal monitoring
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain real-time motor control and actuator firmware from early prototypes through production
- Develop, implement, and tune feedback control systems that meet the timing, safety, and robustness requirements of production robotic systems
- Participate in functional safety activities including hazard analysis, FMEA/FMEDA, fault tree analysis, safety reviews, and support for internal audits
- Build robust pipelines for encoder calibration, current and voltage sensing, filtering, and synchronization
- Validate and debug custom motor controllers and sensors alongside electrical engineers during board bring-up
- Build and maintain hardware-in-the-loop test automation and improve build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and developer tooling
- Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, systems, manufacturing, and safety teams to integrate solutions end-to-end
- Provide meaningful feedback in code reviews to raise software quality and maintainability
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
