Job description
The Lab Engineer will be responsible for establishing and managing a new Product Design lab at Apple. This role involves hands-on machining and fabrication, as well as collaborating with Product Design engineers to translate design concepts into practical solutions. The engineer will operate CNC and manual equipment, ensuring the lab is safe, calibrated, and ready for audits. The position requires a balance of technical skills and the ability to manage multiple requests efficiently.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands-on CNC machining experience, including setup, fixturing, tooling selection, and producing finished parts to drawing.
- Experience owning the operation and upkeep of a prototyping, R&D, engineering lab or machine shop.
- Hands-on experience across mechanical, electrical, and test work in a prototyping or R&D environment.
- Experience performing dimensional inspection and measurement, and interpreting drawings, tolerances, and GD&T.
- Ability to work on-site in a lab environment, including lifting and moving up to 25 lbs.
- Experience designing, standing up, expanding, or significantly reconfiguring a lab, cleanroom, or machine shop.
- Experience operating and maintaining various types of 3D printers and laser cutters.
- Strong vendor and supplier management skills, including quoting, scheduling, and quality follow-through.
Responsibilities
- Own the build-out, commissioning, and daily operation of the new Product Design lab.
- Machine and fabricate urgent parts on-site using CNC and manual equipment.
- Run dimensional inspection to qualify machined parts and manage requests from intake through delivery.
- Ensure the lab is safe, calibrated, and audit-ready.
- Engage with engineering problems behind requests rather than just fulfilling them as written.
- Manage environmental health and safety compliance and calibration programs.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
