Job description

The mechanical engineer role at DoorDash Labs focuses on designing and building connected consumer and enterprise devices, including automation and robotics applications. The team is composed of highly experienced professionals dedicated to enhancing last-mile logistics through innovative technologies. This position involves defining product requirements, prototyping, and leading mechanical development from initial concepts to field pilots. Candidates should be prepared for hands-on collaboration and leadership within a small, multidisciplinary team.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience taking a physical product or subsystem from incomplete requirements through mechanical design, prototyping, debugging, and testing.
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals, including materials and process selection, fit and tolerances, assembly, and practical reliability considerations.
  • Proficiency with a mechanical CAD package such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or equivalent.
  • Product judgment to question requirements and explain technical choices in terms of cost, usability, performance, and business value.
  • Ability to operate independently through ambiguity, prioritize work, and communicate decisions and risks clearly.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers or manufacturing partners and with engineers from other disciplines.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Help define product requirements and features from customer needs and business priorities.
  • Build prototypes for new product ideas and partner on pilot design.
  • Create CAD drawings and physical prototypes, choosing appropriate materials and fabrication methods.
  • Apply mechanical fundamentals and conduct physical tests to validate assumptions.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with electronics, sensors, and firmware.
  • Serve as the mechanical engineering lead with manufacturing partners during new product introduction.
  • Work directly with suppliers on prototype parts and design feedback.
